The Cyclic History of the Line

Brian Schorn was the writer of The Cyclic History of The Line, an essay that loosely introduces the OULIPO. My design with fellow Ravensbourne alumnus Simon Letherland, is a direct interpretation of Brian’s text which could be described by the term 'design as writing'.

In 1998 Emigre received the fifth Charles Nypels Award 'for their innovative typeface designs, and the design and content of Emigre magazine, which was founded in 1984'.  I was privileged to have my name included in a list of contributors to Emigre on the cover of the special publication to mark the award, Rosbeek 43. Commenting on Emigre 36, guest editor Anne Burdick said: 'As processes, as acts that open the door to meaning, design is writing and writing is design. As professions, their areas of expertise are separate but connected; typography is the intersection at which they meet'.

As a writer and a designer I am fortunate to be working with words both as a generator and shaper of content, the 'typographic intersection' is not a crossroads, its a creative and exploratory meeting point.
